Kutaisi is the second largest city in Georgia after Tbilisi. It is situated in the centre of Imereti on both sides of the Rioni river. It is the place where the Rioni flows through Kolkheti valley. The city is located in the centre of the main line (from here we can reach Sukhumi, Poti, Batumi and, by North Caucasus road, Samachablo). By railway (Brotseula – Tskaltubo and Rioni – Tkibuli lines) the city is connected with the main railway lines in Caucasus. The distance between Kutaisi and Tbilisi is 220 km. According to the latest data, the population of Kutaisi is 186,600 people. The area of the city is 7,000 hectares, two thirds of which is residential. Kutaisi is divided into 12 municipal territories. The North-East side of the city borders with Okriba valley, the North – with Samgurali Mountains, the South-East side – with Kolkheti Valley. The population of the city mainly lives in the valley. The north parts of the city are situated on the high banks of the River Rioni; the south parts – on Sapichkhia highland, one of the terraces of the Rioni. The climate is relatively humid and subtropical. Winters are usually warm and dry, but summers are hot. The average temperature during the year is 14.5 ºC, which is 5 ºC higher than in other parts of Imereti. The amount of precipitation is 1730 mm a year. The total length of roads in the city is 312 km.
